For 20 years, my parents had 2 lights in their living room : a floor lamp behind the sofa, and a table lamp. Each day, they have to turn on and off each lamp, which are located at 2 different places, but plugged into a 2 way outlet. The switch for the floor lamp stays in the middle of the cable, and so to avoid bending, my father (75 years) is used to spreads the cable accross the sofa. Each time you sit, you run the risk of hitting this switch unintentionally. And it often happens that this cable falls down between the cushions, so that you have to plunge your arm to pick it back up.

Moreover, the 2 way outlet is under a chest of drawers. This outlet often falls from its socket, and so we have to make contortions to plug it back in.

While browsing in an electronics store, I discovered a kit, which would allow the control of the two lights from a centralised element : it is the X10 Starting lighter kit. Inside the package, there are a Remote Controller (KR 22), a Transceiver Module (TM13), and a Screw Lamp Module (LM15). I inserted the screw lamp module into the floor lamp, and plugged the whole into a standard socket. I inserted the Transceiver module into another standard socket, and plugged the table lamp in it. Thanks to the remote control, my parents could command each lamp separately by radio (ON and OFF). They can also turn them OFF together, just with one click of their remote control, which is really useful when they leave the room to go to bed. They have just chosen a special location for the remote control, near the phone, and now their life is really more convenient.

With other X10 modules, my parents extended the system to other rooms. For example, the parking area and the entrance corridor, where switches were located on opposite walls. When coming back home, my father had to grope about for the parking area switch, and then for the corridor switch. Now thanks to the little remote control, he can switch ON and OFF the lights in the parking area and in the corridor, from the comfort of his car. What peace of mind it gave him and also us, his children ! Now thanks to X10, my parents can light all their way just as they need, from just one remote control !
